The proposal may be a surprise, but the impulse is good, right? Or is it? Do you think that the missionary zeal that St. John shows gives a positive view of Christianity? Is he an admirable character, a positive religious model?
I don't think that St. John should have proposed to Jane because as we had read he was in love with Rosamond, and they are cousins; which in that time it may have been allowed to marry your cousin, but to me it's unearthly. St John had also said that to refuse his proposal is the same as to deny the Christian faith, which in my head is disrespectful because it's like forcing Jane to marry him. I'm glad that Jane ended up refusing marrying him.
I think that St. John is both an admirable religious model and also a positive view of Christianity. St. John always has words of wisdom to say to Jane, and I find it so Christian-like that even before he knew that Jane was his cousin, that he brought Jane into his house from dying on the front of his steps. But I do find it odd though that St. John asks Jane's hand in marriage after he knew that Jane was his cousin. Seems as this was not a problem the time this book was written, since the book has no context of saying that marrying a family member is not a problem.
In my opinion, St. John is a decent character in the book, and also shows a good expample of a christian leader. I find his good intentions of moving to spread his word around very religious and courageous. I do find it odd how he compares jane's denying his proposal being the same as her denying the christian faith. I believe she should have the right to marry who she wants, and not being forced into something. Other than this event in the story, i think that St. John is an admirable character and that he is a true Religious Leader.
